Blog-like Blogs

I haven't been blogging much lately, but I'm thinking about switching to Blogger. I've become obsessed with Googley apps, and also Xanga is becoming slightly ad-y and stuff. I wouldn't abandon beloved Xanga for commenting and nostalgic reasons, and I'll miss the Xanga smilies, but Blogger seems a lot cleaner for actual blogging purposes now. Meanwhile, I suppose I'll get aquainted with Blogger and see what happens.

Edit: For the curious:

I think I will switch over, actually. Everything seems pretty nice, except I haven't found anything analogous to protected posting, which is somewhat disappointing. However, I guess other means can still be used to communicate the content of would-be protected posts, such as Xanga.

Pruts!

Daily Feedings

I've started trying Google Reader today. Bloglines is nice, but I just felt like trying something new (and Googly).

Week 5 begins

ARGH. Senior project is so mosfetty. I would gargle a cup of mosfets if I didn't have to do it. Actually, it could be very interesting if I had nothing else to do. But now it just makes homework look like candy.

Had a Chinese midterm today. I didn't know it was today until last night, but luckily it wasn't hard.

Coming up this week:
  • Tuesday: finish writing revised test plan. Don't forget to turn in GANTT CHART
  • Wednesday: Discrete math midterm 1.
  • Thursday: DSP hw due. Chemistry midterm. Don't forget!
  • Sunday: China Night.
  • Monday: Othro appt.
In between all this, I must figure out how to do some sort of isochronous transfer on the Cypress board! The very minimum at least! So mosfetty.

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Just upgraded from Edgy to Feisty successfully through Update Manager!  I waited a while to do this because I was frightened from messy experiences with Breezy -> Dapper and Dapper -> Edgy. After a couple weird reboots, everything seems to be working great. A few minor fixes needed to be done:
  • Reinstalled Adobe PDF Reader with plugins for Firefox. Added extra repositories to do so.
  • Mplayer trying to start files with spaces in their name through nautilus gives an error, but playing through terminal works fine. To fix this, edit:
    /usr/share/applications/mplayer.desktop
    and
    ~/.local/share/applications/mplayer-usercustom.desktop so that:
    Exec=gmplayer %U becomes Exec=gmplayer %F
Haven't had any other sort of trouble yet. Also, some nice new things include:
  • Quicker startup/shutdown
  • mail-notification 4.0 more features than 3.0 in edgy
  • Newer version of evolution mail
  • Newer version of gaim: 2.0 (pidgin doesn't come until gutsy)
  • Newer version of Amarok
  • Newer version of Open Office
  • Desktop Effects: Fun and kind of Mac-like effects. Slows everything down a lot though, if you want to use it on my computer.
and probably plenty of other things I haven't checked out yet.

Overall I am very pleased with the upgrade. In fact, I was so pleased I almost wanted to upgrade again to Gutsy right away, but chickened out. I'm satisfied with Feisty so far and don't want to cause any unnecessary trouble - a lot of people seem to be having major problems with Feisty -> Gutsy upgrades. Although a lot of people also seem to be upgrading fine too, I think I'll wait a while again before I upgrade again.

P.S. This Xanga weblog entry editor they introduced a while back is always really slow on my computer. While it's nice, I think I'll switch back to the simpler one.
